Heritage Beef by Richard Gunner, One Penny Red
Head Chef RJ Lines, and impressive Gault&Millau Potentialist Finalist Liz Edney have given this popular Summer Hill local, housed in the former two storey Post Office some serious credibility. One Penny Red does well not to forget the simple premise; that restaurants exist to leave their diners feeling both fed and treated equally well. The Front of House team of well-credentialed David Murphy and Nina Alidenes successfully achieve that brief, by supporting the kitchen with a service ethos that others could do well to follow. Enter respected South Australian producer Richard Gunner Fine Meats, with his sublime dry aged Heritage Beef, and you absolutely have a ‘match made in heaven’.
The role of the Chef here is simple, place it respectfully and watchfully over a flame, and essentially stay out of its way with any thoughts of over complication. Season it correctly, and the unforgettable texture and flavour will do the rest. When the provenance of beef from Coorong is this stellar, no jus, or unnecessary intervention of any kind is required. Simply order some crispy spiced salt potatoes, and share this beef between the diners on your table for just $12 per 100 grams. Trust me, once you taste it, you will be back for more!

Dear LBV,
I think the Akamaru Shinaji at IPPUDO was one of the best bowls of ramen I have tasted.
Spot on with those succulent pork ribs that just come off the bone at MCK. I loved that dish. A variation is when it comes in flames from a sweet brandy gravy for more smokiness.
That does sound good!
Cheers,
LBV
So excited! Finally, proper vegetarian ramen in Australia. Ippudo is on my list for my next Sydney visit.
